1905年，路中一（十七代祖師）於山東濟寧家中開始傳教，收了二十五名大弟子，在民國初年，快速拓展至各地。根據一貫道的總會說法，路中一是白陽初祖。1925年，路中一逝世，道務由他的妹妹路中節暫時掌管。

1930年，張天然（張光壁）離開濟寧，以山東省省會濟南为基地，传播一貫道。该年7月10日（農曆六月十五日），張天然自称奉皇母之命，開始三曹齊渡，為一貫道的第十八代祖師，白陽二祖^[1]，不过并未得到路中一其他七大弟子的认同。1934年，張天然又前往天津开教，使之成为一貫道扩展的重要基地。1936年，張天然曾被国民政府软禁在南京近一年的时间。
